Transferring Care
Quite frankly the situation here isn’t good. If you are currently prescribed ADHD medication, an option is to go register with a private UK-based psychiatrist and pay for medication via this route until – and if – assessed by your new GP and Community Mental Health Team (CMHT).
Transferring from England to Scotland
We recommend that you request your notes from your existing GP and any psychiatrist you may have seen (under the Freedom of Information Act if necessary), however you will need to be reassessed when you arrive in Scotland. There is no ability to skip to the queue and there is no guarantee that you will get medication. That’s a decision which your local CMHT makes.
Transferring from Scotland to England
You’ll need to speak to your English GP here – they’ll be able to let you know what information they require. The good news is that you have Right to Choose, so this likely to speed up assessment time if that is outstanding.
Transferring internationally to Scotland
You will need to speak to your new GP, who should then place you on a CMHT assessment waiting list. This can take some time. You’ll need to provide as much medical information as possible including a full written assessment from a psychiatrist. This can speed things up, but there is still a risk that you will need a full assessment on the NHS. The wait can be over a year (and in some areas much longer).
Our recommendation is to build up a medication stockpile if your existing doctor is agreeable. For short term usage, with the support of your existing international doctor, you may be able to get an online provider to issue you a one-off prescription but none of them will do it long term without a UK psychiatrist’s prescription.
